General Overview
The stunningly beautiful and luxurious seaside town of Biarritz is French surfing at its most elegant and brazen. It’s over priced , overrated , overbooked and over crowded but still a wonderful must-visit destination to have a surf and look-see. The soft waves are perfect for some cool longboard glides. There are two main breaks:
Cote de Basque is a tide sensitive right-hander that breaks on shifting sandbars, perfect for beginners looking for some small, clean peaks in picturesque surroundings. During summer months the beach is packed with fashion minded big spenders and the line-up jammed with van camping surfers. Grab your log, paddle out and soak in the ambiance.
Grand Plage is Biarritz’s other surf break and just south of Cote de Basque. The conditions have to be exactly right with a strong but not too strong West swell, with no wind or better yet an easterly off-shore breeze and just the right tide over the appropriately placed sandbar and voila clean little hollow peelers. During the summer the beaches are jammed with near naked and naked, well oiled beach goers of all ilk and description. If you want to stay and play you’ll need deep pockets and ouvert disposé.
