No place can remain a secret forever and Nicaragua is no exception. It has been 20 years since the end of the civil war and word is getting out about this “new” tourist destination. The lure of un-crowded waves, beautiful colonial cities, a huge freshwater lake that is home to both volcanoes and sharks and which may be responsible for the almost constant offshore winds prevalent in the south, are all contributing factors to the increased interest in this Central American country.
The focus of the surf scene in Nicaragua is in the south of the country where the influence of Costa Rican tourism is palpable. There are more tourists, more bars playing American movies and definitely more surfers. There are plenty of quality waves in this region and more than enough surf camps to help you get to them. If this is not quite your scene you can still find deserted beaches in the northern part of the country and for the truly adventurous there is the limitless possibilities offered by the Caribbean east coast.
Health: Drink filtered water and educate yourself about the dangers of visiting a tropical climate, malaria, dengue fever, etc…
Crime: The normal rules of travel apply don’t be flashy with your gear and be aware.
