If the Beach Boys wrote a song called “Surfin’ Australia” it would take at least an hour to list all the surf spots in Australia. Picture the US as an island country with more than half its coastline pumping out ridable surf and you have Australia. Training grounds for many world class surfers and host to many world-renown competitions, the land Down Under is a surfer's paradise. Australia boasts of excellent conditions on the entire east coast up to the Sunshine Coast, Victoria's southern coast, Western Australia's wild south coast and the deserted islands off Australia’s north-west coast. Much of the coastline is still undeveloped and allows for long stretches of uncrowded beaches.
Bring your A-game when you visit Australia! Surfers here are plentiful and experienced so you'll definitely need to hold your own. You can expect to find crowds at the more popular and recognized surf spots like Bells Beach in the south and Kirra in the east, but with so many great beach and reef breaks to choose from, it's possible to escape crowded line ups if you're willing to venture out and explore. There's year-round surf in Australia but the winter months of May through August brings the most consistent surf throughout the country. A word of caution: it's not all paradise in Australia! Chilly water in the south, Great White sharks, deadly box jellyfish, razor sharp reefs and cyclones in the summer can certainly put a damper on your trip.
Health: Be wary of sun burns and heat exhaustion. Australia is home to many venomous and poisonous creatures. Rule of thumb: if you don't recognize it, don't touch it.
Safety: Many unsuspecting tourists get caught in rip tides and drown each year so read all warning signs and don't swim alone. Australia is a relatively safe country with a low crime rate. Use common sense and don't be flashy with your cash and your gear. |
